What is Tensegrity Medicine™?

Tensegrity is an architectural term that describes a balanced structure comprised of equal forces of compression and distraction. The more research that comes out about our connective tissue system/fascia we realize that THIS describes our body! The alignment of our skeleton is 100% dependent on the balanced tension of the connective tissue. A TM practitioner works within the BioTensegrity framework which understands that our body is not a mechanical structure to be treated in parts but rather our body is a continuous, 3 dimensional structure to be assessed and treated in its interconnected wholeness. The goal of a TM session is to create 3 dimensional balance to restore adaptability and resiliency in the body.

Multiple, hands-on, neurofascial techniques are used including Structural Integration, Bowenwork, Reciprocal Gliding with ligament stimulation, Craniosomatic and energetics. All are light touch and stimulate communication between the fascial system and the nervous system. Fascia envelops all tissue-muscular, skeletal, neural, visceral, lymphatic and vascular so not only does a TM session address back pain, sciatica, neck/knee/shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis, etc but a TM session can rebalance the autonomic nervous system which auto regulates many systems in the body subsequently improving migraines, fibromyalgia, digestion and our bodies response to stress.

History of Tensegrity

Architect, Buckminster Fuller and sculptor, Kenneth Snelson identified the relationship between continuous tension and discontinuous compression and coined the term Tensegrity to describe the concept. This paradigm was subsequently applied to the human structure by an orthopedic spinal surgeon named Stephen Levin MD. He labeled this application into soft matter biology as biotensegrity. Currently biotensegrity theory and research is applied from a micro to a macro level in the body.

Prior to this discovery in the early 70's, Dr. Ida Rolf, biochemist and researcher, was describing the fascial system as the 'organ of structure'. After her death, the Rolfing Institute of Structural Integration was formed and her teaching framework of global structural medicine was formed.

My teacher, Kelly Clancy, developer of Tensegrity Medicine™ based out of Seattle, WA, teaches nationally and internationally. She lectures on topics related to biotensegrity, the latest fascia research, biotensegral therapeutic assessment and light touch manual therapy.

Kelly Clancy also teaches the link of emotions, cognitive belief patterns and perceptions and how they affect the body-mind connection in health and well being.
